Sheriff Eric J. Weaknecht has been a member of the Berks County Sheriff's Department for the past 26 years. He started as a deputy sheriff in 1984 assigned to the Court Division. In his years as a deputy sheriff he was assigned to the Court Division and the Service of civil process, including Levies.
In 1996 Eric was promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief Deputy in charge of the Court Division. His duties included the direct supervision of 28 deputies as well as handling all the out-of-county transports, Juvenile transports/Juvenile court and all the maintenance of the Sheriff's department fleet of Vehicles.
In 1999 Eric was promoted the rank of Chief Deputy Sheriff. His duties were to assist the Sheriff in the overall operation of the Berks County Sheriff's Department as well as maintaining the budget and all the purchasing for the department. He was also the direct supervisor of the 4 Assistant Chief Deputies, and the Real Estate Administrator. Chief Weaknecht also developed and maintains most of the computer applications that are currently being used in the Berks County Sheriff's department, he is also responsible for the computer training within the Sheriff’s Department.
On November 7, 2007 Eric was elected Sheriff of Berks County and was sworn into office by Judge Forrest G. Schaeffer, Jr. on December 31, 2007 (Click for Photo). He was elected to a 4 year term effective January 7, 2008.
Sheriff Weaknecht is also the founder and creator of ID Me, a child identification program. So far the program has provided over 25,000 child ID's since its inception in the Fall of 2003.
Sheriff Weaknecht is a board member of Troop L Camp Cadet. Troop L Camp Cadet is a week long summer camp for boys and girls ages 12 to 15, who reside in Berks, Lebanon, and Schuylkill counties.
Sheriff Weaknecht is also a member of Crime Alert Berks County. Crime Alert Berks County is an organization of interested citizens, businesses, service organizations, corporations and social clubs, which formed to help our police departments in Berks County, Pennsylvania, to obtain credible leads that will result in arrests of criminals and solving crimes. This organization's inception was on August 1, 1998.
